A group of Japanese lawmakers has met Taiwan’s Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim in Taipei. They discussed ways to prepare for a possible contingency in the Taiwan Strait.
The talks took place on Monday. The lawmakers and Hsiao agreed that the two sides need to maintain communication in both politics and the private sector.
The Japanese lawmakers are working to address national security issues.
Members of the group include former defense ministers Ishiba Shigeru and Nakatani Gen from the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and Maehara Seiji, the leader of an opposition party called Free Education for All.
The lawmakers are scheduled to meet President Lai Ching-te on Tuesday.
Ishiba told reporters that it is important to learn from Taiwan about China’s actions and capabilities.
