This picture is of the Eastern horizon at the exact spot where the sun rises in the morning, but this was around 20.30 when the sun was setting in the West. Location is the Rhône Valley in Valais/Wallis.
What are these blue beams? Absence of reflection of the sunset on the snow on the higher mountains behind these mountains perhaps? Can anybody explain this phenomenon?

to my knowledge this is a shadow cast by a mountain due to a the low (behind the horizont) standing sun

I am confused by your text, is the image showing East or West? Considering it was taken at sunset it must be West but you’ve written it’s East?
