Until regulations are brought in to curb how they collect, utilise and sell data to data brokers, as well look into how they uplift certain types of content causing radicalisation as it has a better return on investment for them, nothing will change in the slightest. Especially if all they do is fine them a pittance; if you wanna hold these companies to account for real use scalable fines that reflect the impact of the damage incurred. And go for the managerial/executive level employees who sign off or bring forth the methods used that cause the negative effects.
It’s all fucking talk, go do something and then we’ll see. If they just keep putting out puff pieces and soundbites while letting the companies continue as normal then it’s nothing but fucking smoke and hot air. I personally do not think our government has the backbone to do anything, even these social media companies radicalise people into going to the homes of the politicians themselves who could enact change. They just see the euro signs and don’t want to tackle the money men for fear of having to come up with a different way of bringing money in that isn’t so heavily reliant on multinational tech companies.
I appreciate that the article linked does mention going after senior level staff but codifying and then actually *doing anything* are very different things in Ireland when it comes to our legal system. The article also states they’re just gonna hit them in the pocket again. For fuck’s sake, why stop there? Fines are the cost of doing business when you’re a multi-billion/trillion dollar company. Such lackadaisical thinking from our government as per fucking usual.

until you see politicians actually deleting their Twitter accounts, you can take all talk of social media regulation with a good pinch of salt

Hmmm….Should we not be more worried about the actual morons posting on social media, than the platform they use? It’s not like those idiots disappear, just because regulations are put in place.
