Japan’s Yuasa Ami, known as Ami, has won gold in the women’s breaking at the Paris Olympics.
The 25-year-old took all three rounds in a battle against 17-year-old Dominika Banevic, known as Nicka, from Lithuania, in the final on Friday.
Breaking is the only new sport at the Paris Olympics. Athletes take alternate turns to perform in a one-on-one contest, improvising to the music played by the DJ. They compete for such criteria as technique, execution and originality.
Ami successfully executed a freeze, or a total stop, in round one, and showed great footwork in round two. In round three, the final, she received a high score in musicality to clinch the gold 3-0.
Nicka won silver and 18-year-old Liu Qingyi, known as 671, from China, took bronze.
