In order to share my nocturnal research on Nazi Germany, I will also educate the reader of the post to the best of my knowledge. Nikolaus entered the rabbit hole through the Barbie interview, where he is interviewed by a cunning French journalist. Namely, Klaus Altmann, or Klaus Barbie, one of the most wanted men of the period following the collapse of Nazi Germany, who operates under the pseudonym Klaus Barbie, lives a rather peaceful life in Bolivia. However, since there is a suspicion that Altmann is not who he presents himself to be, under certain conditions a press conference will be held with him, of which there is also video material. The man claims he doesn’t know French, but accidentally answers a French question in German. Also, pictures of Jean Moulin are placed in front of her, which Barbie grabs and shakes her head indifferently. Unfortunately or fortunately, his fingerprints reached the nearby French embassy through a journalist, and from there it was already certain that it was Klaus Barbie. Bolivia did not release Barbie to France until 1983, and since the death penalty had been banned there a few years earlier, the old and emaciated Nazi sat in prison until his death in 1991.

One of his most famous crimes, besides torturing Jean Moulin to death, is ordering the deaths of the Izieu children. In a small village, 70 km from Lyon, lived the so-called Izieu commune, where 44 Jewish children aged 4-17 received shelter and care. Thanks to an anonymous informer, the information reached the Nazis, and on April 6, 1944, the Nazis invaded the farm, the children were deported, and their final stop was the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, where 42 children and 5 adults who took care of them were definitely killed. The two adults apparently survived, at least for a while. The children were mainly taken care of by Polish Jews Sabine Zlatin (aka “Dame d’Izieu”) and her husband Miron Zlatin. Sabine Zlatin was elsewhere at the time of the raid and lived a long life, while her husband Miron was taken to Estonia and executed.

Is there any more detailed information about this? Why Estonia, where it took place (Wikipedia says Tallinn, but you could perhaps know more precisely), when did he get here? It seems like a very long trip just to put a bullet in someone’s head, and the Nazis weren’t exactly known for longsuffering.
