The Myanmar military’s northeast regional command reportedly has been seized by ethnic minority rebels. The junta says it has lost contact with senior officers at the stronghold.
A media outlet close to the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, or MNDAA, said Saturday the militia took control of the headquarters in the central city of Lashio in eastern Shan State.
Another local news organization released footage it says was taken at the base and shows surrendered soldiers and their families.
On Monday, a junta spokesperson criticized the MNDAA for breaking a ceasefire that had been in place since January this year and resuming attacks on July 3.
Zaw Min Tun said soldiers at the base fought bravely, but the junta lost communication with senior officers at the command on Saturday night, and some have been detained.
Special forces have been stationed at the command for many years to deter ethnic armed minorities. If it has indeed fallen, it would be a serious blow to the military.
