These butt bins were handed out around 2003 as part of a Dublin City council campaign to curb littering.

  1. That’s actually a nice idea, I smoke rollies and end up holding on to my butts.

Even though I don’t use filters, they always felt scratchy on my throat.

I think my parents still have them in the house from working with the council. Neither smoke..

I was over in Japan on the honeymoon earlier in the year and besides having particular places where you have to go to smoke (though some businesses still allow smoking indoors), one thing that seemed very popular in osaka though we we didn’t see often in Tokyo were [these tiny little smell-proof purses.](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-e6bd3736dca014e53d00472bcb9dbc30.webp

Dead handy things that cost about €2 in a 7-11, if there was nowhere to put a cigarette (many smoking areas didn’t have a bin etc). You just stab out the smoke and pop this in your pocket. Then when you (eventually) came by a bin, you empty it.

The idea in the OP is in the right place, but especially with us having bulkier phones in our pockets now than in 2003. Theres also the issue of personal responsibility – in Japan smoking areas   people would carefully walk towards the central ashtray thingy when there was one every time there was ash to flick, while over here people will literally throw a butt in the ground less than one foot from a half empty bin.
