Ecevit Alkan, the lawyer of the citizens of Akevler Neighborhood in Hatay, where the resistance continues due to the ‘reserved area’ "Such practices have never been seen in Düzce or Van. The state has never thought of buying people’s plots, even if they are empty, and making a profit from them by zoning them." said.
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change sent evacuation notices to houses in the Akevler Neighborhood of Hatay’s Antakya district, which is within the scope of the reserve area. It asked citizens to evacuate their houses within three days.
The residents of the neighborhood, who have been fighting against being declared a reserve area for months, are determined not to leave their homes and living spaces.
Lawyer Ecevit Alkan is the legal advisor of citizens living in this neighborhood and other regions declared as reserve areas. According to Alkan, who spoke to bianet, the neighborhood has historical and social importance. It is also known as an ancient and old settlement of the region.
Alkan, who said that the neighborhood was partially damaged in the earthquake but is in a much better condition compared to the rest of Hatay, said, “It is a place where life goes on. Those who went out of town after the earthquake also returned. Neighborly relations still continue.” He noted that those living in Akevler Neighborhood live in their houses with little or no damage.
Alkan added that initially 34 people filed a lawsuit against the declaration of the region as a reserve construction area, and later this number increased to 60 people.
“Deputy ministers are trying to convince people”
Stating that the Ministry of Environment is working with all its might in the field to implement the project, Alkan said, "Deputy ministers are here all the time. They are trying to convince people. But I don’t think they have a chance to convince anyone. Because this law is against human rights. When 80 percent of the city has been destroyed, it is inexplicable to destroy the 20 percent that is still standing." he spoke.
Alkan said that there was no earthquake here for the first time in Turkey, "Such practices have never been seen in Düzce or Van. The state has never thought of buying people’s plots, even if they are empty, and making a profit from them by zoning them." He criticized the AKP’s Hatay policy by saying:
About the reserve building area
These are the areas determined by the Ministry, upon the request of TOKİ or the Administration or ex officio, to be used as new settlement areas in the applications to be carried out in accordance with the law numbered 6306, known as the “Urban Transformation Law”.
However, with the amendments made on November 9, 2023, the definition of “reserve construction area” in the law was also changed, paving the way for the seizure of areas that are already residential areas.
