A Ukrainian fencer has won the country’s first medal at the Paris Olympic Games in the women’s individual sabre event.
Five-time Olympian Olga Kharlan reached the semifinal by beating Japan’s Fukushima Shihomi and other competitors, but she lost to a French fencer in the semifinal.
In Monday’s bronze medal bout at the Grand Palais in central Paris, Kharlan faced off against South Korea’s Choi Sebin.
Kharlan rallied from a six-point deficit to triumph 15-14, winning a bronze medal for her country.
The 33-year-old has now earned a total of five Olympic medals in both team and individual events.
Kharlan said she had fought for Ukrainian athletes who were killed by Russia and for Ukrainian soldiers who defend the country. She dedicated the victory to her country.
The fencer said she would like to thank everyone who supported her.
