Powerful film. I highly recommend you watch it.
I saw it earlier today at a London screening followed by a Q&A with the director in Armenia via Zoom.
Few points regarding the Q&A:
- First, director is very capable and deserves all the support she can get – God bless her and her family. She is in my opinion a true voice of Armenians globally and of those refugees from Artsakh and of those that lost relatives in the war and of those with relatives still in prison in Baku.
- Her father used to paint religious motifs at Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in the now ethnically cleansed Artsakh.
- She mentioned how she spoke with another person today whose brother is still MIA. There are many Armenians without closure.
- A Ukrainian woman in the audience shared a story about briefly meeting an Armenian during a visit to Armenia years ago and how when the Ukraine war started the Armenian offered her shelter during a difficult time for her when Russian invaded.
- A question was asked about the ‘protests’ and what she thought of them and in response explained how embarrassing it is to have to discuss it given how marginal they were and not representative of the general population who looked upon the ‘pope’ as a clown – which of course goes counter to the narrative from some of my loud diasporan cousins & organizations on X. But in my opinion also goes to show the Armenian people’s narrative can be misconstrued by friends and foes alike.
- Finally, she worries about the likelihood of a new war in Armenia over Syunik given Azerbaijan’s continued belligerence and given the global indifference to the ethnic cleansing in Artsakh.
