Mitsubishi Electric says it has signed a deal to supply components for a radar system on US Navy ships.
The Japanese firm announced on Wednesday it contracted with RTX, a US air-defense equipment company.
It will start supplying the components from around 2028. It will be the first time for the company to supply defense equipment to the US military.
Mitsubishi plans to manufacture the components at a factory in Kamakura near Tokyo.
The company has been stepping up its defense business. Last year, it exported an air-surveillance radar system to the Philippines. This was its first delivery of finished defense products based on Japan’s three principles on the transfer of defense equipment and technology abroad.
Mitsubishi is also working on radar and electronic components for a next-generation fighter jet jointly developed by Japan, Britain and Italy.
