US President Joe Biden has given his first public address in Washington since deciding to drop his bid for re-election. He says it’s time to make way for younger voices.
Biden said he has decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation, adding that it’s the best way to unite the nation.
Biden ended his campaign Sunday, weeks after a poor debate performance and amid growing calls from members of his own Democratic Party to step aside.
He’s endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. She’s expected to officially become the party’s nominee in the coming weeks.
Biden also mentioned Harris in his speech, saying, “She’s experienced, she’s tough, she’s capable, she’s been an incredible partner to me, and a leader for our country.”
Biden said he chose to run for office four years ago because “the soul of America was at stake.” He added that it still is, noting that Americans have a choice between moving forward or backward.
Biden also said: “the great thing about America is here kings and dictators do not rule, the people do. History is in your hands. The power is in your hand. The idea of America lies in your hands.”
Biden said he’ll spend the next six months focusing on his job as president, growing the economy and defending people’s rights.
