The leaders of Canada, Australia and Ireland have turned to social media to thank US President Joe Biden after his announcement to pull out of the US presidential race.
In a message posted on his X account, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote, Biden is “a great man, and everything he does is guided by his love for his country. As President, he is a partner to Canadians — and a true friend. To President Biden and the First Lady: thank you.”
The post includes a photograph of Trudeau and Biden sitting side by side in Canada’s House of Commons, both smiling.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also thanked Biden in a message posted on X. The message says, “The Australia-US Alliance has never been stronger with our shared commitment to democratic values, international security, economic prosperity and climate action for this and future generations.”
Meanwhile, Ireland’s prime minister, Simon Harris, said in a statement, “President Biden has been a voice for reason, effective multilateralism and shared solutions,” amid extraordinary global challenges. He described Biden as “a proud American with an Irish soul.”
The US president has Irish ancestry.
Harris also recalled Biden’s trip to Ireland last year. He said, “The outpouring of love and support from the public… was a testament to how highly the President is held in his ancestral home.”
Harris added: “He relayed the words of his parents that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. Anyone who knows or has watched Joe Biden knows that these are more than words to him but the way he has always conducted himself in public and private life.”
