Japan affirms support for Bosnia-Herzegovina's bid for EU membership Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko has affirmed Japan’s support to Bosnia and Herzegovina for its EU membership bid.

Kamikawa met Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic in Sarajevo on Thursday.

Kamikawa said at their working dinner that cooperation among countries in the region and joining the European Union are important for the region’s strong development and promoting peace and stability.

Fierce ethnic conflicts erupted in the 1990s when Bosnia-Herzegovina declared independence from the former Yugoslavia, and tensions remain.

Kamikawa expressed expectation that the country will enforce the rule of law and that relevant parties will work together.

She said Japan will support the country’s economic development and bid for EU membership. Kamikawa also told Konakovic that Japan will offer technological support to reduce the risk of forest fires.

Konakovic thanked Japan for its help so far, including that to eliminate landmines. The ministers confirmed cooperation in efforts to achieve stability.
