Media report that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says in a letter to EU leaders that former US President Donald Trump will immediately work for peace between Russia and Ukraine if he wins reelection.
Orban held a series of diplomatic talks on the Ukraine situation after Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union this month.
The leaders he met include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Orban last week met with Trump, who now is the Republican presidential candidate.
Media outlets including Reuters reported on Tuesday that Orban wrote in the letter that Trump “will be ready to act as a peace broker immediately” in the Russia-Ukraine conflict if he is reelected.
The reports say Orban added that Trump “has detailed and well-founded plans for this,” and expressed the need for the European Union to prepare for a possible US policy shift on its support for Ukraine.
Orban has been sparking debate over his known pro-Russian stance, including his past opposition to EU support for Ukraine.
His efforts, including his series of talks with world leaders, have drawn criticism from those within the European Union who accuse him of taking advantage of his country’s position as the presidency holder, and of being irresponsible and insincere.
