Submission statement: Former Deputy National Security Advisor [Matt Pottinger](https://www.hoover.org/profiles/matt-pottinger) joins *The Foreign Affairs Interview* (a show by u/ForeignAffairsMag) to discuss his recent publications on China, Taiwan, and US foreign policy priorities.
In conversation with *Foreign Affairs* editor Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, Pottinger makes the case that the US needs to remain present and engaged in East Asian and Indo-Pacific affairs. What’s more, Pottinger suggests that the US, in its competition with China, should not aim for the minimalist goal of “managing competition.” Rather, he advocates an embrace of the idea of American victory in the present great power struggle.
Pottinger also argues that defeat in Ukraine would increase the costs of deterring Russia and China in the future. Do you agree that it would be “penny-wise, pound foolish” for the US to reduce military and economic assistance to Ukraine, in light of the broader geopolitics?

If US are to deter China they need to send troops into Ukraine. Sending money won’t do anything. US could send taiwan a trillion and China wouldn’t care.
