Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is known for his pro-Russia stance, has held talks with former US President Donald Trump.
The meeting took place on Thursday at Trumps’ Mar-a-Lago estate in the southern US state of Florida after he attended the NATO summit in Washington.
Orban has been showing his intention to mediate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In his recent meeting with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Hungarian prime minister proposed that Zelenskyy consider a temporary ceasefire and peace negotiations with Russia.
After the meeting with Trump, Orban said in a social media post that they “discussed ways to make peace. The good news of the day.”
He added that Trump “is going to solve” the issue.
Trump posted a message on social media saying, “There must be PEACE, and quickly. Too many people died in a war that should have never started!”
Hungary currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Earlier this month, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
With regard to the talks between Orban and Trump, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Orban was not acting on behalf of the EU.
