Hi all,
I’m a US citizen currently living and working in Basel, but am planning to move back to the US within the next few months. According to my employer, I need to provide them with a confirmation of marital status (I am not and have never been married) in order to withdraw my Pillar 2 benefits from the company pension fund. I contacted the Civil registry office in Basel (https://www.bdm.bs.ch/Zivilstand/Weitere-Registerauszuege.html) in order to obtain a civil status certificate, but they responded that apparently I am not registered in the Swiss civil status register. Are there any other US citizens here that have been in a similar situation? Do you know how I might be able to obtain an official marital status confirmation for my employer? For example, if Basel/Switzerland is unable to issue me a certificate, would it be possible to obtain one from a US embassy/consulate, and if so would it be recognized as satisfying the requirement?

You can sign a Affidavit of Civil Status at the US Embassy (on appointment only)
