At least nine people died when a car plowed into pedestrians in central Seoul on Monday night.
The vehicle drove onto a sidewalk and hit people waiting at a traffic signal at around 9:30 p.m. Authorities said nine men, ranging in age from their 30s to 50s, were killed and four other people were injured.
The accident happened in an area busy with tourists, with Seoul City Hall and a popular historic site nearby. Police said there have been no reports of foreigners among the casualties.
South Korean media outlets reported that the car apparently drove in the wrong direction and collided with other vehicles before hitting the pedestrians, citing police information and security camera footage.
The driver in his 60s reportedly told police that the car accelerated suddenly.
