South Korea’s military has released footage that it says shows a mid-air explosion of a ballistic missile launched by North Korea on Wednesday.
North Korea claimed on Thursday, one day after the launch, that it had successfully tested the separation and guidance of multiple warheads.
Footage released by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday shows an ascending white contrail and a spiraling object.
Other footage filmed by a thermal observation device shows the projectile apparently breaking into pieces.
South Korea’s military says the missile made an abnormal flight, and exploded in mid-air.
It described North Korea’s claims of a successful test as deception and exaggeration to cover up the failure.
South Korea is on alert in case the North makes another attempt to launch the same type of missile.
