They were urged to stay on the upper level of buildings. The order was later lifted in most areas.

Japan Central Railway says bullet train service has resumed between Shin-Fuji and Shizuoka station, after it was temporarily suspended.

A mudslide alert has been issued in Shizuoka, Nagano and Kagoshima prefectures.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency says warm moist air flowing into the rain front and a low pressure system are making atmospheric conditions in western and eastern Japan extremely unstable.

Rain is forecast through Friday and Saturday morning with up to 200 millimeters expected in the Tokai and Kinki regions, and 180 millimeters in southern Kyushu.
