The operator of instant messaging service Line is introducing tougher measures to combat social media scams. The move follows an increase in online criminals impersonating celebrities to promote bogus investments.
LY Corporation says its Line app will now alert users by message when they receive an invitation from an account they haven’t previously communicated with.
The firm will also alert users to known scams and how they operate.
Many of these schemes involve inviting users to a Line chatroom run by someone claiming to be a well-known celebrity. The swindler then touts a fraudulent investment promising high returns.
Line has also added a scammer option for users reporting suspect groups and messages.
The firm will suspend accounts it identifies as suspicious.
Officials say they will continue beefing up measures to fight online fraud and theft.
