“Armenian-American veterans posed on the southwest side of the Capitol Building. They were financed by the women of the Armenian Red Cross, now the Armenian Relief Society, to petition Washington to diplomatically recognize the Republic of Armenia. Moses Nahigian was Commander of the Boston Veterans. Mr. Nahigian is pictured. The veterans gathered at South Station in Boston, MA, and took a train to Washington, going directly to the steps of the Capitol. The then senator of Massachusetts, Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr., spoke to the assembled veterans, saying “Our battleships cannot reach Mt. Ararat.”
Armenian American World War I veterans lobbied for United States diplomatic recognition of the Republic of Armenia. On April 23, 1920, the United States extended de facto recognition to the Republic of Armenia on April 23, 1920 and granted the new nation $6,000,000 in aid.

Seal in English at bottom right reads: “Boston Branch, A.A.W.W. Veterans” (also in Armenian)
Inscription at bottom reads: “Armenian-American veterans at Washington, April 14, 1920” (also in Armenian)
