Hi, for a few weeks I have noticed a proliferation of these midges inside the house. There are about ten of them scattered around the various rooms although I noticed a tendency to concentrate in the kitchen and bathroom.

Unfortunately I don’t have a banana for scale, but they are a few millimeters large (approximately 2/3 mm). They are black, they don’t flutter around but tend to stay in one place unless disturbed. They are not annoying, they don’t tend to run away but in fact they are easy to catch even with bare hands (are they stupid?).

I vacuum them up every day with the vacuum cleaner but they promptly come back. I have been living in this house (countryside, province of Varese) since 2023 and I noticed them in the spring-summer period, in winter they disappeared completely. I always keep the mosquito nets inserted, the house is thoroughly cleaned entirely once a week. The recycling bins are outside the house, under the sink there is a bucket into which I never throw wet or food residue. On the kitchen table I have a fruit basket in which I keep a few apples.

Any ideas on what they are? Why are they there? How to get rid of it?

They aren’t particularly annoying but they disturb me.

A thousand thanks
