>Historically low utilization of production capacity, a decline in turnover of 14 percent and a decrease in exports of 18 percent. The annual economic figures of the Belgian chemicals and pharmaceuticals show that the competitive position of the sector is under severe pressure, according to the umbrella federation Essenscia […]

>In concrete terms, the utilization of production capacity in our country will have fallen to 65 percent in 2023: the lowest level ever. Due to the high energy costs, several production lines are still at a standstill. “It has been dragging on for several quarters now, and we are seeing that for the first time,” says Yves Verschueren, managing director of Essenscia. ‘This threatens to become structural.

[…]However, the biggest alarm bell according to Essenscia is that there are no more major investments in the pipeline. “No major investments have been announced in 2023,” says Verschueren. ‘We’ve never experienced that before. Normally there are about ten each year. The fact that investments are coming to a standstill worries us enormously. ‘Companies lack certainty in choosing Belgium for investment decisions, says Hans Casier, chairman of Essenscia and CEO of Ineos Phenol (active in the production of phenol and acetone). ‘I have a global position, I visit Asia and America and there is a lot of discussion there. What does the future look like for European industry? Is it safe to make strategic investments there? There are ideas, but they are not being further developed at the moment because the context is not attractive.’
