Except there hasn’t been “cheap” bedsits for 15-20 years.

Shitty bedsits were charging as much as normal accomodation up until we banned them.

When I was on Erasmus around 2012, I had a bedsit in France for 300 a month. Similar bedsits were going for 600 here.

I moved to germany because of the price of accommodation in Ireland. It was the single biggest reason I moved. I had a job in tech and was on a decent but not amazing wage.

To afford a one bed apt in or near Dublin it would have been 60% plus of my wages. I can’t imagine what it’s like if you’re just working in a supermarket or call centre. I started out working in those jobs and there’s no way I’d be able to afford a place, even with a second wage.

I now live in the centre of a large German city. And I mean the centre. I’m a 10 minute walk from the main shopping street which is filled with Prada and Cartier shops. It makes Grafton street look like Talbot street. My apt is close to 100m2 and I’m paying 1,100 a month for it. Yes, it came unfurnished and I paid Ikea about 5k for all my furniture, but still compared to Ireland it’s still amazing.

And in Dublin there’s ~~bedsits~~ studios, smaller than my current kitchen that are going for close to 2k.
