Of all the media, I think that music is by far the most important thing in the world. At least for me. Music defines a person. Especially in smaller areas such as Koprivnica. It has always been known who goes out to which club/café, and with that you declared your (musical) affiliation and were proud of it. If you went out to Cvrčak, Zepelin, Kameleon, Kugla, it was known – Punk-Metal- and every possible alternative to the mainstream. If you used to go to Orinoco and Nautilus and what do I know, then you were a girl, and automatically, we don’t have anything to talk about. I started listening to Billy Joel and Tina Turner as a kid. But, for God’s sake, you have to start somewhere, right? The first really big influence on my musical development was a friend from the Đoni school, who in the first grade of high school (which was in 1988) brought me a compilation of songs on a 90-minute audio cassette and told me “here you are, listen to it, it’s a real muse”. Đoni recorded for me Iron Maiden, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead and many more. That’s when I got caught listening to these wretched things. I liked this tape and started researching in the direction of Heavy Metal. I listened to everything I could from these bands, then my cousin Dado, who at that time went to school in Varaždin, told me, “Well, in Varaždin, those metalheads listen to a Sepultura band in our student dormitory”. Then it took me 2 months to get a cassette with some recordings of that band. At the same time, I was hanging out with Davor, he was listening to Sodom and it was from him that I first heard about the German band Rammstein. Then I started hanging out with Valenta and Kondor, and they were listening to some other bands that I had never heard of before. Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Megadeth, and that was a bit too extreme for me, and in a way I got fed up with metal and started looking for something new, something fresh and exciting. Then I started hanging out with my godfather Markovic and Božoj, and they in turn discovered some new bands for me: At The Drive In, Rage Against the Machine, All, Blink 182. And at that time I also started going to rehearsals at Krule’s in the basement, there, between the sets of the songs of the local band Bludnice, there was a lot of talk about music, and we all discovered new bands, which were Rancid, New Bomb Turks, Nofx. But the club Kameleon had the strongest impact on my musical tastes. Still very green, young and inexperienced, I started going there, it was 1994 and the club was run by the drummer of the Koprivnica band Don’t, Jura, and he did fantastic things for us kids. He brought bands that would come to Croatia to play only in Koprivnica to Kameleon. Fucking. Then the NOFX album with the big hit “Dont call me White” was released https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkrHYHqChlI, which was played in Kameleon several times a night, and that’s when I knew that slowly but I’m certainly changing my direction towards discovering Punk/Grundge/Garage Rock and other directions… I’ve already started listening to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains a lot. Then I talked to Elvis from Karpis who assured me that the Ramones are the best band in the world. At the time it was not clear to me what he was talking about, but now some 30 years later I understand him completely and agree with him. Jurkas used to run in there somewhere with his eternal elevating of Jesus Lizard, a band that I have never been able to understand, but for that I blame myself as a limited villager who does not understand some of the more artistic scope of music. Shit, I’ve always been for the simple thing, rhythm, melody and hits. As the years went by, I increasingly expanded the circle of people with whom I shared my opinion on musical expressions, so Kos often suggested that I should listen to Bad Religion and Queens of The Stoneage, for which I am infinitely grateful, and along the way I also discovered the Eagles of Death Metal. Then came the phase when I became a father and lived as a family man, and my contact with music was only occasionally watching British MTV2, when the wife and child fell asleep, then I would connect the headphones to the TV and watch new videos until 3 in the morning. That’s when I discovered Arctic Monkeys, Libertines, Keizer Chiefs and some other bands that are very dear to me (Mando Diao, Manu Chao, Kings of Leon, The Strokes), and at that time I used to often talk to Zoki about music at work, and he and sang in a band, I don’t remember the name of the band anymore, mostly we used to discuss Linkin Park, Enter Shikara, Incubus, White Stripes….. In the last ten years, unfortunately, I have to say that I have stagnated in discovering new bands , and I guess the last thing I discovered was Gogol Bordello, Billy Talent, Lucy Spraggan is fantastic, and We are scientist are also a really cool band. But I also started going back to the bands I missed, I started listening to the Stoogies, Husker Du, Hard-Fi, Guano Apes and even started listening to Blur in a sad lack of exciting new music. Even today, after listening to hundreds of albums, I have several conclusions. 1) I’m still a metalhead at heart and I like to play Iron Maiden while no one sees or hears, but I’m not ashamed. 2) I’m still looking for new and exciting bands whose albums I would like to listen to 3) Music has enriched and filled my life to the fullest, especially the periods when I actively played in bands and constantly hung out with people for whom music was just as important as me. 4) Today, I no longer choose a type of music or identify with it. I equally like listening to Zaz, Megadeth, Manu Chao or Wir sind Helden. Every kind of music has its value. 5) I often pick up recordings of demo bands that never became popular and listen to their music. Fat Precedent, Razlog Za, Angry Cows, Pasi, Dead Fish, or whatever strikes my fancy. These recordings have the same musical value. Some demo band ideas are excellent and unique and worth hearing. 6) I still think I’m an ignorant villager when it comes to music because there are hundreds more albums that I haven’t listened to and they are certainly just as important in the general picture of music today. 7) I have not mentioned the domestic music scene until now, because I honestly think that there are very few valuable exhibits. I was personally impressed by TBF and Elemental with their fantastic music and lyrics, Overflow because of local patriotism but also because of the quality of their work, Hladno Pivo of course, which unfortunately stopped working in its original form. Natali Dizdar had a couple of wonderful songs that I really liked, Dječaci and Vojko are a nice refresher, as well as the project songs “Adio Trafikonte” and “Evo me doma” by Leut Magnetik. Beyond that, everything is kind of average, nothing special. At least from what I had the opportunity to hear. You some Urbani, Vatra, if you forgive me, boring as hell. But that’s just a matter of my taste, I respect everyone who likes both Urban and Vatra. Dino Dvornik level for himself. And finally, I’m putting a link to a song that not long ago slapped me left and right and showed me the way that there is hope that some song still excites me and that I should go google the lyrics of the song and watch the live recording and think, um, you should watch this live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vipq31sKos Greetings!
